CAPE SEASON OFF TO A GOOD START FOR VARSFONTEIN

by | Dec 5, 2013

Captain America, the Varsfontein bred Captain Al colt (ex Requista by Fort Wood) won the inaugural running of the R2 million Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes run over 1400m at Kenilworth on 23 November. Although he was going for his 5th consecutive win, it seemed unlikely he would be able to overcome the odds on favourite, Red Ray. In a pre-race interview trainer, Brett Crawford expressed his concerns. His feeling was that if the race was 200m further it would make the task easier but with that prize money on offer it was worth a go. That “go” certainly paid off and Captain America won going away by 1.25 lengths. The duel between himself and Red Ray meant the rest of the field was left in the dust.

Varsfontein sold Captain America at the 2012 National Yearling Sale for 400k. He was later sold at the Ready To Run Sale for 500k.

All three – Jet Aglow, Master Of My Fate and Captain America looked destined for bigger and better things.
